Wyoming Area advanced three wrestlers to the semifinals and Pittston Area got two through during Friday’s action in the District 2 Individual Wrestling Championships at Hazleton Area.
Each team also had four wrestlers alive in the consolation brackets when wrestling resumed Saturday.
Wyoming Area made it through Friday’s action, which limited the fields to four title contenders and four others alive in pursuit of third place in each weight class, in sixth place out of 11 teams in Class 2A. Pittston Area was 11th of 16 teams in Class 3A.
Junior Kyle Emsley (132), sophomore defending champion Connor Wrobleski (170) and freshman Jaden Pepe (106) reached the semifinals for Wyoming Area.
Pepe won two Friday bouts, both by quick pins, while Emsley and Wrobleski won one each.
Pepe stormed into the semifinals in just 13 seconds of wrestling, beating Lake-Lehman’s Brendon Boston in eight seconds and Hanover Area’s Tyler Mizell in five.
Rocco Pizano (138) and Vincenzo Giambra (152) each went 1-1 on the first day. Garret Pocceschi (113) and Ethan Speece (285) made it to Saturday with the help of a consolation bye.
Pittston Area senior A.J. Gorto (160) and freshman James Spindler (145) each won twice to make the Class 3A semifinals.
Both won by a pair of pins with Spindler’s quarterfinal bout ending in the first period.
C.J. Demark (152) and Adrian Colon (220) won two out of three Friday bouts.
Jose Oritz (113) and John Symons (195) split their two bouts.
Keegan Bucci (106), Nico Solano (132) and Alex Anastasia (182) won once before being eliminated by their second loss.
