Jason DeBoard and Chris Starinsky were the only two Pittston Area wrestlers who made it through Friday’s competition and were still wrestling Saturday in the second annual Flo X-Calibur Tournament at Wilkes University.

Starinsky lost in his first bout at 138 pounds Friday then came back to win consecutive decisions.

DeBoard went 3-1 on the first day at 160 pounds. He opened with a pin, lost in the next round, then came back to win a pair of decisions, including a major decision.

The tournament was being dominated by host Wyoming Seminary, the nation’s top-ranked prep school wrestling team. For this event, however, the Blue Knights were not using any of their post-grad team members while going against high school teams.

At the end of the first day, each weight class had been trimmed about in half. There were four semifinalists left and eight wrestlers remaining in the consolation brackets of each weight class, trying to make it from the final 12 to the eight place-winners.

Pittston Area returns to action Wednesday when it is at Crestwood in its first Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 match.
