The Wyoming Area boys lacrosse team is in the middle of a long week off, setting up their chances at the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association District 2 Class AAA tournament.
The boys fell to Delaware Valley, 20-2, on Thursday. The Warriors got goals from Alex Hawk and Anthony DeAngelo in the second quarter, but the Warriors of DelVal were too much to handle. Wyoming Area does not play again until Thursday, May 7 against Lake-Lehman.
Under coach Shaun Rohland, Wyoming Area is in its inaugural season and is still looking for its first win.
“They are doing well,” Rohland said of his young team. “We’ve vastly improved since the first game of the season. They’ve come a long way and are eager to learn.”
One of the biggest hurdles for the Warriors is their youth. Although the team has three seniors, Wyoming Area is made up of mostly freshmen and sophomores. That leads to some intimidation, at times, according to Rohland.
“We’re trying to get mentally into it,” Rohland said. “It’s going to come. Sometimes they get a little intimidated. When teams get off the bus, they are a lot bigger than us.”
Wyoming Area has shown some positive signs over the course of the first season. But the past week and the upcoming week will prove to be important to the team while searching for its first win.
Rohland said the team has been able to work on some different things in practice and the team has been executing well.
“There are a lot of positive signs so far,” he said. “We’re going to make mistakes. But we continue to come out and work hard. That’s all I can ask.”
Tentatively, the Warriors will be slotted against top-seed Delaware Valley in the first round of the district tournament.
“At this point we want to play and we want to see the things we’ve improved on against the best team in the district,” Rohland said.
