February 2005
Tina Durako led all scorers with 13 points as the Seton Catholic girls basketball team rolled into the PIAA District 2 Class A final with a 39-37 win over Old Forge.
Durako added 17 rebounds with her 13 points. She also added seven blocked shots. With 28 seconds left, Old Forge tied the game at 37. Seton’s Brittany Dobbs then made a free throw to take the lead.
February 1995
Wyoming Area’s girls swim team took home a silver medal in the PIAA District 2 Class AA swimming championships.
Bishop Hoban won the title by winning all 11 events, and placing second in eight.
Wyoming Area’s Jenn Van Fossen, Jill Ferritti, Amber Soska and Helene Sabola each qualified for the state tournament. Those four were part of the second-place 200 medley relay team.
February 1985
Wyoming Area wrestler Marv Gilpin scored a double-overtime pin over Pittston Area’s Carl Sheperis to win the PIAA District 2 wrestling championship in the heavyweight division.
The Warriors finished second in the district with Gilpin scoring the 3-0 win for the team’s only title. Pittston Area wreslters won three silver medals.
February 1975
Pittston Area wrestlers John Licata and Phil Dunn each won PIAA District 2 wrestling championships in their respective weight classes at the John Long Center in Scranton.
Licata posted a 4-1 win in the finals to take first place in the 167-pound class. Dunn registered a 10-3 decision to cop first place in the 142-pound class.
February 1965
In the Modern Lanes Ladies Bowling League, Martha Campanella rolled a season-high 279, just missing a perfect game while bowling for Fainberg Furniture.
Campanella rolled a 596 series. The 279 was the highest total for any woman in the league in 1965.
