DURYEA — The Germania Hose Company Coyote Hunt is back for a second year with competition scheduled for Jan. 16-18.

John Amico, who is organizing the event for the hose company, said the existence of other coyote hunts as fire company fundraisers, including the highly successful Triton Hose Company hunt in Tunkhannock, convinced Germania to give it a try last year.

According to Amico, the 2014 event did not raise funds for the company, but it broke even. That led to the hope that a repeat of the hunt, with the addition of associated raffles, will make it larger and more successful.

In conjunction with the event, raffles are being held for a gun, a Cabella’s gift certificate and a taxidermy gift certificate with the prizes being drawn at the hose company’s pancake breakfast next month.

“We have it on the Internet, so that reaches anywhere,” Amico said, with hopes to draw more than last year’s 35 entries. “We advertised in the PA Outdoor News. We’re on Facebook and we sent personalized invitations to each of last year’s entries.”

During last year’s event, five male and one female coyote were killed, with two each coming from Luzerne, Lackawanna and Columbia counties.

Registration, with a fee of $30, will close on Jan. 10. Hunters can pay an additional $5 to be part of the largest female contest.

To be eligible, coyotes must be killed between 12:01 a.m. Jan. 16 and noon Jan. 18.

Calls and dogs may be used and participants can hunt in groups, but each member must be registered. All participants must have a valid Pennsylvania hunting or fur-taker license and valid photo ID. Licenses will be checked when coyotes are weighed in.

All coyotes must be killed in Pennsylvania and any violation of state Game Laws and Rules will lead to disqualification. Official weigh-ins will be conducted from 3-7 p.m. Jan. 16-17 and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Jan. 18.

Any hunter who kills a coyote will receive his $30 entry fee back and be eligible for additional prize money. The largest coyote is worth 50 percent of the prize money with 30 percent going to second place and 20 percent to third.

Applications can be sent to Germania Hose Company Coyote Hunt, 430 Foote Ave., Duryea, PA 18642.
