PITTSTON — Pastor Rev. Carlos Esquivel, O.S.J. and the Holy Name Society of St. Joseph Marello Parish will hold the Palm Sunday Smoker at 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 29 at the parish’s Mt. Carmel Center, William Street, Pittston.

This event is for all men and young men from the parish and surrounding area. This is an annual affair that hosts a dinner and featured speaker, while enjoying the company of old friends and new acquaintances.

The speaker this year is Rev. Joseph Adonizio M.A., M.S. The toastmaster will be the Honorable Judge Joseph Augello.

Tickets for the event are $12 and can be obtained at the St. Joseph Marello Parish Office, all Holy Name members, or by calling Jim Murphy at 570-654-4929. Tickets sales will be very limited at the door.

Rev. Joseph Adonizio

Adonizio is the son of the late Gaetano Adonizio and Concetta Lello Adonizio, and is a native of Hughestown. He attended Hughestown grade schools and graduated from Hughestown High School. He graduated from the University of Scranton with a B.A. degree in Philosophy, Psychology and Education. He taught in Hughestown public schools in the English and Latin departments and graduated from Bucknell University where and earned a Master of Arts degree in Education and Administration.

He entered the Seminary of Christ the King at St. Bonaventure’s, Olean, N.Y. for his theological training and received a Master’s degree in Theology and graduated magna cum laude. He was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Jerome D. Hannon, D.D. on May 26, 1956, at St. Peter’s Cathedral, Scranton. He offered his first mass at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, his home parish, in Pittston, PA on May 27, 1956.

Adonizio’s first pastoral assignment was at St. Mary’s Assumption Church, Jessup. He served as pastor of Immaculate Conception Church in West Pittston from 1985 to 1999. During his tenure, he was on the pastoral committee instrumental in establishing the Wyoming Area Grade School and served as a member of the pastoral board of Seton Catholic High School. After his appointment as Pastor Emeritus of Immaculate Conception Church, he accepted the assignment as Pastor of Blessed Sacrament Church, Hughestown.

Currently he serves throughout the diocese in various pastoral assignments.

Judge Joseph Augello

Senior Judge Joseph M. Augello was appointed to the Luzerne County Court of Common Pleas in February 1990 and served on the court for 20 years before transitioning to senior status. In 1997 he was selected by the judges of the court as President Judge of the Court of Common Pleas and served in that capacity until 2002. He is presently assigned as a senior judge in Luzerne County.

He formerly served the Pittston region as Magisterial District Judge prior to his appointment to the Court of Common Pleas.

Augello is a graduate of the Scranton Preparatory School, the University of Scranton and the Temple University School of Law. He has been awarded the University of Scranton Alumni Achievement Award and Person of the Year Award by the Italian American Association of Luzerne County. He has served on the Board of Trustees of the Scranton Preparatory School and the Board of Directors of the Greater Pittston Chamber of Commerce.

Augello is a member of St. Joseph Marello Parish and former chair of the Pastoral Council. Prior to the formation of St. Joseph Marello Parish, he was a member of Saint Rocco’s Church, graduating from Saint Rocco’s School and serving as president of the Pastoral Council, the Fides Club and the Holy Name Society.

Augello resides in Pittston with his wife, Mary Virginia. They have two daughters, Susan Augello Kuhl and son- in- law, Nathan Kuhl, and Jeana Augello. He is the son of Michael Augello of Pittston and the late Susan Augello.
