EXETER — Three local field hockey players decided four years in high school wasn’t enough.

Wyoming Area seniors Abby Schwerdtman, Christina Granteed and Carrie Pozaic each decided to continue their respective field hockey careers at the college level.

Schwerdtman and Granteed will both play at Wilkes University under coach Sara Meyers. Pozaic will travel a little farther, as she will take her talents to Worcester, Massachusetts and play for the Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Wyoming Area coach Chris Comiskey, who took over the program this past fall but was involved with the team for the last couple years, couldn’t be happier with the way the girls performed over the past several seasons, and he will miss them.

“It was a nice transition for me based on the seniors we had,” he said. “We didn’t want this year to be a rebuilding year. They were a huge part of that. They kept the ship going and made it very easy for me.”

Granteed, a goalie for the Warriors, expects to do the same at Wilkes where she will study pharmacy. She noted that the speed of the college game will be difficult to adjust to, however she looks forward to the challenge. She chose Wilkes because the campus was a nice fit for her.

“I really liked the coaches there,” she said. “It’s going to be tough at first. The ball speed is going to be a lot faster but, hopefully, I’ll live up to it.”

Schwerdtman will be Granteed’s teammate at Wilkes and will study biology/pre-physical therapy. The proximity to campus was one of the main reasons she chose Wilkes.

“Wilkes is close to home and it was the best fit for me,” she said. “It was a hard decision and I’m happy it’s over. I’m really happy with my decision and I’m excited to keep going.”

Pozaic, who was accepted to nine colleges, will get to WPI with the intentions of studying chemical engineering and business.

“The field hockey is an added benefit,” Pozaic said of WPI. “You’re really involved in what you’re learning there. It was a hard decision, but it will help set me up for success.”
