Wyoming Area graduate and Syracuse University junior field hockey player Serra Degnan was named captain of the team for the spring season, according to head coach Ange Bradley.

Degnan, a 2013 graduate of Wyoming Area, led Syracuse to the NCAA Division 1 national championship game last fall. The Orange fell to the University of Connecticut, but Degnan’s presence on and off the field led her to be named captain for the spring season in January.

Along with Degnan, senior Emma Russell was also named captain.

“Her communication is outstanding,” Syracuse head coach Ange Bradley said about selecting Degnan. “She gives direction and organizes on the field. We want her to be able to take the next step. She communicates well with the coaching staff.”

Degnan, who is a forward for the Orange, started every game last season for Syracuse.

“It’s definitely an honor to be named captain of such a strong program with that kind of legacy,” she said. “I’m thrilled to be a part of it. It means so much to me. It’s nice to be able to help the team back to a national title again this year.”

Degnan wasn’t recruited heavily when she came out of Wyoming Area. When Bradley did see her at camps, Degnan reminded her of fellow Wyoming Valley athlete Katie Nearhouse, a Nanticoke grad who transferred to Syracuse. Luckily for the Orange, Bradley said, Degnan chose to play for Syracuse.

Syracuse will finish its spring season with a game against Team USA U21 team on Saturday, April 25.
