PITTSTON — The St. Joseph Senior Social Club will honor and celebrate the annual setting of the St. Joseph’s Table on at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 12 at St. Joseph Marello parish center.

La Tavala de San Guiseppe is a tradition that began in Sicily centuries ago in thanksgiving for the ending of a severe drought that resulted in countless deaths due to famine. The custom was continued in America by immigrants and descendants of Sicily, Italy.

The table constructed in three tiers to represent the Holy Trinity and Holy Family will be laden with various foods that will be distributed to the needy. The Rev. Joseph Sibliano, OSJ, who is celebrating 50 years ordination to the priesthood, will be the honored guest. The Rev. Carlos Esquivel, OSJ, pastor of St. Joseph Marello parish, will bless the table and Sibilano will give the benediction.

Members and guests attending the celebration are asked to bring canned food or dry staples that will be placed on the altar and then donated to the St. John the Evangelist Church Food Pantry.

Non-members are invited to attend. Reservations are $15 per person and seats are limited. Rose Marie Amico, chairperson, is taking reservations at 570-654-0046. The closing date for reservations is March 5.
