April 2005
Trailing 3-1 after the singles matches against their cross-river rivals, Wyoming Area took three of the final three matches to give the Warriors a 4-3 win over Pittston Area in Wyoming Valley Conference boys tennis action.
PA surged to a 3-0 lead with Bill Dructor, Matt Gavlick and Joe O’Brien winning singles matches. Wyoming Area’s Donny Wilce won a singles match for the Warriors.
Wyoming Area’s Zack Brady/Joe O’Brien, Chris Wash/Wilce and Anthony Pizano/Marco Stallone won doubles matches to give the Warriors the win.
April 1995
Seton Catholic’s baseball team fell to the Wyoming Valley Conference favorites Northwest, 2-1, but earned a lot of respect form the entire league.
The Eagles led 1-0 with five outs to go before Northwest tacked on two runs to take the win. Seton pitcher Al Zangardi had a perfect game through four innings. Zangardi and Corey Skula combined for 10 strikeouts and gave up just four hits.
April 1985
The Pittston Area boys tennis team improved to 4-0 under first-year head coach Bob Reddington with a 6-1 win over Meyers.
Joe Valvonis, Kevin Brannon, Gary Worosilla and Sean Hannon won both singles and doubles matches to lead the Patriots. Earlier in the week, the Patriots beat Lake-Lehman behind the efforts of Valvonis, Brannon and Hannon.
April 1975
The St. John’s baseball team opened the season with a 13-2 win over Wyoming Seminary behind Joe Murphy.
Murphy belted three hits, including a triple and a home run in the win. George Hizny had two hits, while Mike Valenti had one. Frank Baldinga struck out six batters to pick up the win. He also had two singles.
Two days later, the Johnnies blanked defending champion Hanover Area, 4-0, as Hizny tossed a five-hitter and struck out six.
