January 2005
A late surge from Wyoming Area gave the Warriors a 52-48 win over Pittston area.
Down by five with less than five minutes to playmWyoming Area’s Chris Pellegrini and Tyrell George led the comeback. Mike Butera made a key block and two free throws down the stretch to preserve the win.
Wyoming Area was led by George’s 18, Guy Fasciana’s 14 and Pellegrini’s eight. Pittston Area got a game-high 23 points from Paul Chimel.
January 1995
Pittston Area fell to Tunkhannock, 44-35, to finish the first half of the Wyoming Valley Conference basketball season without a win.
The Patriots used a press early on, and it worked. After that, it was all Tunkhannock.
Pittston Area’s Christine Munski led the Patriots with 12 points. Cory Echalk had 10, while Kelly Newcomb poured in five.
January 1985
Wyoming Area’s boys basketball team picked up its first conference win with an 82-45 rout of Tunkhannock. The Warriors finished the first half at 1-7.
The Warriors scored 32 points in the second period. Sophomore center Bob Cella scored a game-high 34 points. Senior Joe Nocito pitched in 20 points, while Paul Grablick scored 10.
January 1975
Pittston Area and Wyoming Area wrestlers battled to a 30-30 tie.
The highlight of the night came when Paul Rushefski beat the previously-undefeated John Licata, 8-6, at 167 points. Licata had won 19 straight dual meets and was the MVP at the Bishop Hoban wrestling tournament.
Down by six heading into the final bout, Pittston Area’s Bob Sylvester pinned Ernie Nicholson in 3:06 to cop the tie.
January 1965
During the week, St. John’s picked up two key wins to set up its chance for the Southern Division championship of the Catholic League.
In a win over St. Mary’s, Frank Smith scored a game-high 26 points, while Mike Burke poured in another 18. Frank Allan scored 18 points in a win over Saint Leo’s later in the week.
January 1955
Billy Olshefski scored 25 points to lead Pittston Central Catholic to an upset boys basketball win over St. Mary’s of Wilkes-Barre, 92-79.
Tommy King scored 18 points while Tony Bruno netted 15. Jimmy Lynch had 11 and Joe Ruane finished with six points. The win knocked St. Mary’s out of the top spot in the league.
