Moriah Lynn pitched well after the first inning and the Dawgs took advantage of a couple Wyoming Area miscues to post a 4-2 victory that clinched the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 softball title.
The victory gave Berwick (10-3) its second consecutive Division 2 crown. The Dawgs also gained the second seed in this week’s District 2 Class 3A playoffs. Valley View (13-0) of the Lackawanna League will be the top seed.
Wyoming Area garnered the six seed and will take on No. 11 seed Coughlin Monday at 4:30 p.m. at Wyoming Area’s Atlas Complex in the opening round of the PIAA District 2 Class 3A playoffs.
“It depends on what day of the week it is,” said Wyoming Area coach John McNeil about his team’s chances in districts. “We look great sometimes, like Saturday (9-1 win over Tunkhannock), and then we look average, like today. When we play together, we’re a pretty good team.”
Wyoming Area’s Emily Wolfgang hit a solo home run in the fifth inning to bring the Warriors within striking distance, but it wasn’t enough. Nicole Cumbo pitched well, going all seven innings and giving up just five hits.
Nanticoke 14, Pittston Area 4
Julie Lieback had a triple and Lauren Dragon had a double for Pittston Area in a loss at the hands of Nanticoke.
The loss moves the Patriots to 5-9 in Division 1 with the PIAA District 2 Class 3A playoffs beginning tomorrow. The Patriots, going into the tournament as the No. 10 seed, will take on seventh-seeded Honesdale at 4:30 p.m. in Honesdale.
Leandra Ramos struck out 12 for Nanticoke (8-7 Div. 1), which snapped a five-game losing streak. Jenna Lipowski led the offense with a double and a triple for Nanticoke.
