December 2004
Pittston Area’s Alicia Bryk and Arianna Pourmonir each had four first-place finishes as the Patriots beat rival Wyoming Area in girls swimming.
Pourmonir won the 200 and 500 freestyle and was on the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams. Bryk won diving, the 100 freestyle and anchored the winning freestyle relay team.
The Warriors threatened to take the first event, the 200 medley relay, but Pittston Area’s Michelle D’Amico, a three-time winner, overcame a 10-yard WA lead in the butterfly leg to set up PA’s win.
Wyoming Area’s Colleen Davis won two events for the Warriors – she led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200 individual medley. Brittany Laffey and Steph Davis rounded it out.
December 1994
Pittston Area and Wyoming Area each picked up wins in boys basketball.
Pittston Area got 24 points from Scott Appel in an 82-67 win over Wyoming Valley West to put the Patriots at 2-1 in the Wyoming Valley Conference.
For the Warriors, Mike Riddle was the factor in a win against Northwest, 62-55. Riddle scored 20 points while Dave Brocca had 10. The win was Wyoming Area’s first conference win of the season and improved to 1-2.
December 1984
Pittston Area’s girls basketball team garnered blowout wins over Hanover and Crestwood to move to 3-0 on the young season.
The Patriots beat Crestwood, 70-49. Sue Charney and Cheryl Grady led the onslaught with 15 points each. Mary Ellen Opeka had 14 while Mary Pat McMullen and Kay McAndrew notched 10 each.
Pittston Area roughed up Hanover, 80-33. Opeka had a game-high 23 points while Grade aided the cause with 18. McMullen had another 10 for the Patriots.
December 1974
Wyoming Area’s wrestling team picked up two wins.
Coached by Harry Cooper and Bob Clapps, the Warriors beat West Side Tech, 40-22, and Scranton Tech, 26-22. Ed Chiampi (133), Andy Hreha (145), Scott Skrescavage (heavyweight) and Paul Ocheski (167) all earned wins in the week.
December 1964
Under first-year coach Bob Barbieri, the Pittston Panthers made their debut an impressive one with a 57-55 win over Wilkes-Barre Marymount. The Panthers ran into some trouble late when Billy and Jimmy Richards and Len Lojewski fouled out.
Joe Hughes and Furry DeRome led the Panthers to the win.
