The winners of the Little Miss and Little Mister Library contest for the Greater Pittston area libraries were recently announced. The winners were Lauren Granteed and Preston Klem.
West Pittston
The West Pittston Library is located at 200 Exeter Ave., West Pittston.
A Bread Making Class will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. on Monday, April 28 and from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29. Cost is $10 per person. Join Mary Agolino and Art Valli with this two-night class at First United Methodist Church in West Pittston to learn to make your own bread from scratch. Participants need to bring an apron and a 3 ½ to 4 ½ quart covered, oven-safe dish. Registration is required for this program.
Veteran’s Voices Writing Workshop will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 1. This five-week writing workshop focuses upon the craft of writing as a way for veterans to share their life experiences. Veterans who have served in any branch of the military – during times of peace or conflict – are encouraged to register. The workshop culminates with an optional public reading on May 29. Teaching the workshop is Wilkes University alumnus Bill Schneider, who is completing his M.F.A. in creative writing. Registration is required for this free program.
Star Wars Cut-Outs Open House will be from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 26.
Once upon a time, in a library very close by, there were cardboard cut-outs of your favorite Star Wars characters. Join us for “Star Wars: The Science Behind the Movies.” Also, “Star Wars: The Science Behind the Movies” will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 10.
Baking for our Four-Legged Friends will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, May 12 at the First United Methodist Church, Wyoming Avenue, West Pittston. Coas is $10.Treats will be made for our furry companions. Nikki will teach us how to make healthy treats for our best friends as well as foods to avoid keeping our pets healthy. Selling on eBay: The Basics will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14. Join Maria Juinta Heck as she takes you through the basics of setting up your own account, tips for taking photos and descriptions to maximize sale potential. Registration is required for this free program.
Star Wars: May the Fourth Be With You children’s program will be held at noon on Saturday, April 26. Create a pool noodle light saber, practice Jedi training to survive the asteroid field and more. Afterwards, sign your family up for a Star Wars Trivia Contest. Registration is required for this free program.
American Girl Party will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 17. An afternoon celebration will be held for Girl of the Year for 2014, Isabelle, ballerina and fashion designer. Enjoy excerpts from the latest American Girl book, participate in theme-related crafts and activities, and break for a snack. Children must be 8 or older. All participants must bring a T-shirt that will be cut and wear comfortable attire. Registration is required for this free program.

In conjunction with PA One Book Every Young Child , the library will have a special storytime and activity hour based on the book “Stripes Of All Types” at 3 p.m. on Monday, April 28. This free event is open to all preschool and kindergarten age children in the community.
Unclaimed Property Search will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 24. This will be the last search until the summer.
Time to clean out your closet. A purse and jewelry exchange at 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 1. This is a free event. Bring in unwanted and gently-used jewelry and handbags and exchange with other participants. It is a great way to get something new without having to spend a dime. A representative from Pittston Chiropractic wil be at the library from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 8 doing complimentary health assessments for adults and children.
Meet Children’s author Amy Faatz at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 15. Amy is a local resident who recently published the book “Oliver Knows All About The Moon, Do You?” Amy will read her book, meet with the kids and do an activity based on the book.
Children in grades one to five are welcome to stop by the library to pick up story starters which allows them to finish a story using their own imagination. Awards will be given for the most creative stories. Deadline to enter is Tuesday, May 13.
The Crochet Club meets at 10 a.m. every Tuesday and at 5 p.m. every Thursday.
