January 2005
Seton Catholic’s girls basketball team won the 2004 Greater Pittston Holiday Tournament, 57-53, over Pittston Area.
Seton’s Tina Durako picked up her second tournament MVP award, scoring 24 points. Durako was the second player in the tourney’s 12-year history to win the award twice. Seton’s Laine Sheerer won in 1995-96.
Seton was 25-for-38 from the free throw line. PA’s Kristen Baumes scored 16 of her team-high 20 points in the fourth quarter.
January 1995
Wyoming Area’s Alyssa Chiampi was named tournament MVP of the Greater Pittston Holiday Tournament after scoring 56 points over a two-game stretch and a Warriors’ title.
Chiampi scored 25 points in a 59-55 win over Wyoming Seminary in the first round. In the championship game, Chiampi netted 31 in a 65-62 win over Seton Catholic.
January 1985
A 50-38 win from Pittston Area over Wyoming Area was the only win recorded by local high school basketball clubs in a tough week on the hardwood.
PA’s Joe Silinskie and Sean Queeney scored a game-high 14 points. Pivot man Pat Walker tallied 10 points while Jerry Mondlak finished with nine.
Joe Nocito led the Warriors with 10 points.
January 1975
Pittston Area swimming Tom Meade won first place in the one-meter board diving event at the Knights of Columbus Tournament held at King’s College.
Unbeaten in his last 23 events, Meade won the event not only against high school divers, but several college divers. Meade also took second place in the high-dive event, although it was his first time he had competed in that event.
January 1965
The West Pittston Rams remained in a first-place tie with defending champions Northwest as they garnered wins over Exeter and Luzerne.
The Rams finished off Exeter, 71-54. Gene Lepore and John Serino poured in game-highs 21 and 20 points, respectively. John Williamson and Joe Cefalo had 11 points.
In the second game of the week, the Rams defeated Luzerne thanks to 21 points from Ned Smith.
