Members of the Wyoming Area Kiwanis Club recently heard a presentation on the Perinatal Program of Wyoming Valley Alcohol and Drug Services. Presenter was Jessica Budzak, a Drug and Alcohol Counselor at the Agency.
Budzak explained the risks to unborn children when mothers smoke, drink alcohol or use drugs during pregnancy. Budzak explained the workings of the Perinatal program at Wyoming Valley Alcohol and Drug Services. The program was started by a grant from Blue Cross of Northeastern PA. The program includes valuable prevention/education information prior to, during and after child birth. The aim of the program is to provide the services in order to improve the health and wellness of unborn children by educating and guiding pregnant women and women of child bearing age concerning alcohol, drug, and tobacco use, abuse and addiction.
Budzak explained she was amazed that at this time, there are women who become pregnant and do not recognize the danger to their child by exposure to these substances. Women who are pregnant and are experiencing difficulties with alcohol, tobacco or drugs may receive assistance from Wyoming Valley Alcohol and Drug Services by calling 820-8888.
