Pittston Area girls tennis team started its 2014 campaign on a high note. The Patriots won both of their matches last week in convincing fashion.

Elaina Menichelli, Kari Scull and Claudia Shandra each have started the season 2-0, making it look quite easy. Only one of their matches went to three sets.

The doubles team of Mikhaela Moher and Sara Swartz also have yet to lose.

Hanover Area 1

Pittston Area’s Elaina Menichelli and Kari Scull each won tough singles matches to help the Patriots clip the Hawkeyes.

Menichelli, playing at No. 1, defeated Gabrielle Keating, 7-5, 6-2. Scull won her match with Marissa Kremenic, 6-2, 7-5 (7-2).

Claudia Shandra made quick work on Hanover’s Lauren Richmond, 6-2, 6-3. Pittston Area’s doubles team of Mikhaela Moher and Sarah Velehoski won 6-0, 6-2.

Tunkhannock 0

In Hughestown, Pittston Area picked up a sweep of the Tiger, dropping just one set over the course of the match on Monday.

Elaina Menichelli picked up a 7-6 (7-0), 6-2 win over Jill Patton. Claudia Shandra took down Briann Grey 6-1, 5-7, 6-4. Kari Scull was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Ellie Kuzma.

In doubles, Mikhaela Moher and Sara Swartz 6-0, 6-3, while Kristen Capitano and Sara O’Hop won 6-0, 6-2.

Wyoming Area 3,

MMI Prep 2

Wyoming Area singles players Kierstin Grillo and Lauren Perry took home wins for the Warriors on Monday against MMI Prep.

But it was the doubles team of Julie Banas and Sam Williams, with a 6-1, 7-6 (11-9) outstretched tiebreak win that turned Wyoming Area into a 3-2 winners over MMI Prep.

GOLF

The 2014 high school golf season teed off Monday at the Tryba Preseason Tournament at Fox Hill Country Club in Exeter.

Pittston Area’s Tyler McGarry carded a 76 for a third-place finish. Wyoming Area’s Maddy Wharton shot an 80, good for a tie for fifth.

Anthony Shaver and Ryan Wrobel each fired 86. Pittston Area’s David Zydko shot 88. Wyoming Area’s Brian Berti shot 90.

As a team, Wyoming Area shot 352, while Pittston Area shot 356. That was good for sixth and seventh, respectively. Crestwood won the overall team title with a score of 317. Up until this year, Holy Redeemer won four straight Tryba Tournaments.

Crestwood senior Jason Dotzel picked up his first high school tournament victory, needing a tournament-record four playoff holes to top Holy Redeemer’s Ryan Crossin after both forced a playoff by shooting 74.

Wyoming Area 187

Wyoming Area’s Ryan Wrubel shot a team-low 42 in a loss to Coughlin on Friday at Fox Hill Country Club.

Ryan Keyes shot a match-best 38 to lead Coughlin. Coughlin’s Tyler Kurilla and Collin Krokos each shot a 42. Wyoming Area’s Maddy Wharton and Billy Peck each shot 48. Carter Kisakavitch shot 49.

Pittston Area 199

Tyler McGarry led Pittston Area with a 43 in a loss to Dallas at Irem Temple Country Club Thursday.

Braulio Garcia (50), Dave Zydko (52) and Allie Craig (54) finished out the scoring for the Patriots.

Tyler McGarry shot a 34 to grab medalist honors in Pittston Area’s win over Tunkhannock and Coughlin at Fox Hill Country Club.

Teammate Dave Zydko shot a 42, while Allie Craig shot a 47 and Braulio Garcia finished with a 49. John Meck shot a 51 for Pittston Area.

Dallas 177, Wyoming Area 179

Wyoming Area’s Billy Peck medaled with a 41 in the loss to Dallas at Irem Country Club.

Teammate Carter Kuscavagge shot a 42, while Maddy Wharton and Ryan Wrubel each shot a 48 in the loss.
