Borough police are investigating two daytime burglaries that occurred earlier this week in Duryea.

A resident of the 200 block of McAlpine Street reported that someone entered the home by smashing out the window on the basement door and unlocking the door sometime between 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Monday.

The victim went through the home but initially could not tell if anything was taken. The victim later reported that jewelry was missing.

A Wood Street resident reported that sometime between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Wednesday, someone entered her home and stole cash from an envelope she had left on the table to pay a juvenile who cuts her grass. She also found that jewelry and loose change were missing, and that the burglar had rummaged through a box of baseball cards.

Borough police called in the state police Records and Investigation Unit to check for evidence.

Police noted the only things in common between the burglaries are that the houses are near a wooded area and that jewelry was stolen.

Duryea police ask that anyone with information contact them at 570-457-1721, extension 2 or extension 3.

Police also advise neighbors to be vigilant and alert to things going on in their neighborhoods and to call 911 and alert police as soon as possible if they see something strange or out of the ordinary.

Police advise residents who find that someone broke into their home to not touch anything, get out of the house and call 911 immediately.
