• Pi Day

The Pittston Area Math Department will be celebrating Pi Day with a Mathematics/Science Career exploration day. Professionals in Math related or Science Fields are invited to speak to the students, regarding their specific field of study.

The Pi Day will take place at the Pittston Area High school on Friday March 14, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Any professional who would like to volunteer in this career exploration day should contact Math Department Chairperson Heather Koss @ heather.koss@pittstonarea.com, or (570)654-2415 ext 2100.

INTERMEDIATE CENTER

• Classrooms get laptops

All second, third and fourth grade classes received 10 new laptops and a storage cart from the district. These laptops are enchaining the technology curriculum of the district. The Intermediate Center is launching “Hybrid Learning” with a new program, called I-Ready, to help with student achievement. The laptops will be used throughout the classrooms for independent and collaborative instruction.

PRIMARY CENTER

Kindergarten Registration

Dr. Michael Garzella, superintendent of the Pittston Area School District, has announced registration of students planning to attend kindergarten in the district for the 2014-15 school year will be from 9 to 11 a.m. and from 1 to 3 p.m. on March 17, 18, 19 and 20 at the Pittston Area Primary Center, Rock Street, Hughestown. Students will be registered alphabetically according to the child’s last name: A-F will register on March 17, G-L on March 18, M-R on March 19 and S-Z on March 20. All students must be 5 years old by Aug. 31.

Parents are asked to bring the child’s birth certificate and immunization records. All children entering kindergarten must have proof of the following immunizations as required by Pa. Dept. of Health: DPT, four doses, one dose on or after the fourth birthday; Polio, three doses; MMR, two doses; Hepatitis B, three doses; Varicella (Chicken Pox), two doses or history of disease. The school district also requires parents to show proof of residency. Acceptable documentation includes: deed, lease, current utility bill, current credit card bill, property tax bill, vehicle registration, driver’s license or DOT identification card.

Each child will also receive hearing and vision screenings. They will also receive a Reading Readiness Assessment. Registration packets may be found at the Primary and Intermediate Centers. Parents may pick up the packets between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
