I’d like to start off by praising WA resident George Race for comments he made at the WA work session on Tuesday June 17. Many applaud Race for his vigilance and knowledge of the district’s finances. Although I did not attend, I spoke to people who did. Better yet, as a hard working tax payer, I’ve been quietly keeping tabs on the happenings in the district and the actions of certain school board members.
Since last night’s session, it appears that a glaring question remains unanswered: What happened to the rather hardcore anti-nepotism stance that Estelle Campenni and her Utopian Daydreamers took in the beginning of their campaign to run for school board? Relatives of school board members now have this amazing contract whereby they received a 15% raise and pay zero towards their healthcare? My question is, wasn’t this what these people initially promised us would no longer occur had they been elected?
I would never downplay the necessity of good educators. But as a healthcare worker exposed to highly communicable diseases on a regular basis, I’m more than a little taken aback by the fact that I not only have to pay into my own healthcare plan, but also have to contribute paying for the healthcare of those, who let’s face it, get a child with an upset tummy in class and ship him or her off to the nurse. That combined with their salaries alone, and the fact that they only work 9, 10 months out of the year should be more than sufficient. Let’s not allow greed to be camouflaged by the importance of a good education.
At the end of the day, the teachers supported Campenni, and she delivered for them. And that is what happens when you allow the fox to enter the hen house. All of you who clapped and cheered during her rallies, I hope you’re still in celebration mode when you get a look at your tax incease.
