Pittston launched its new Pango Smart Parking system Friday evening at 5 to coincide with the city’s Second Friday Art Walk.
Pango, short for “pay and go,” will allow drivers to feed meters using their smartphones. It will also allow them to find available parking spots using the Pango app they can download to their phone.
Coins will still work at meters and credit/debit cards and coins will still work at parking kiosks, but drivers will no longer have to worry about carrying change for the meter. The system works using GPS technology.
All a driver has to do is download the app, load credit card and vehicle information into it and, after pulling into a spot, open the app and press the “Pay for Parking” button. The app will keep a running toll in five-minute intervals. No worries about the meter running out and getting a ticket.
“Pittston is a progressive city on the move, and Pango makes it convenient for our drivers to park in the city,” said Joe Moskovitz, city manager. “The city also gains important information on who our parkers are and how they are using our parking in the downtown. We believe the city will deliver better services and generate more parking revenue with Pango.”
Neil Edwards, president of Pango USA, said Pango transformed parking in Scranton during the last year, “so we are excited to continue the progress in Pittston.” The Lackawanna County seat was the first city in Northeastern Pennsylvania to offer smart parking, and it’s proven popular there.
Pango had a booth located at the Tomato lot during Friday’s Art Walk. Every one that signed up to Pango Friday received the first 10 hours of parking for free.
