West Pittston Borough officials helped begin West Pittston Tomorrow’s levee petition campaign at their monthly meeting March 4.

The petition asks federal and state lawmakers “to vigorously and persistently make the case to the U.S. Army Corps for West Pittston’s urgent need for adequate flood protection, the same protection already provided for the vast majority of Wyoming Valley residents.”

West Pittston Tomorrow is urging neighbors, friends, residents of surrounding communities, as well as former West Pittston residents – no matter where they are now — who still care about their hometown to sign the petition. The organization received over 350 signed petitions the first week.

Plans are to keep up the effort until at least 5,000 signatures are collected.

The petition is in today’s paper on page 22 or can be found on the organization’s website www.wptomorrow.com.

Drop-off sites also have extra copies of the petition.

The petition can be signed on-line or printed and returned to: the West Pittston Library, Agolino’s Restaurant, Ballyhoo Ice Cream, Crest Cleaners, Miss Kim’s Coffee-to-Go and Wyoming Valley Beverage or mailed to West Pittston Tomorrow, Suite 100, 555 Exeter Ave., West Pittston, PA 18643.

Local churches have also been distributing petitions.
