Wyoming Area’s Mruk finishes second in conference tournament

Wyoming Area sophomore Corey Mruk reached the Wyoming Valley Conference Wrestling Tournament title Jan. 7 at Lake-Lehman before settling for second place at 170 pounds.

Steven Newell from Dallas pinned Mruk in 1:41 of the battle between defending District 2 champions.

Mruk reached the final by edging Mike Lenahan from Hanover Area, 5-4, in the quarterfinals, then pinning Colin Browne from Meyers in 3:17 of the semifinals.

Wyoming Area placed ninth out of 13 in the team standings. Coughlin beat out Tunkhannock for the team title, 202-187. The Warriors had 99 points.

Pittston Area had 36 points to place 11th, finishing in front of Berwick and Meyers.

Wyoming Area had five semifinalists.

Justin Joseph decisioned Hanover Area’s J.J. Hooper, 6-3, in the 195-pound consolation final to finish third.

Charlie Banishefski (145), Alex Pierce (152) and Jaryn Polit-Moran (182) placed fourth.

Pittston Area’s Ryan Lombardo, at 132 pounds, and Wyoming Area’s Robin Wrobleski, at 138 pounds, each won 6-5 decisions in their final bouts to finish fifth.

Anthony Thomas (126) and Jake Rutkowski (285) were sixth for the Patriots.
