DURYEA — School-aged children in the borough may participate in the “Duryea Casualties of War Essay Contest” by submitting an essay about one of the soldiers, sailors, marines or airmen who gave their lives as a casualties of war and were Duryea residents.

There are three categories:

• Elementary School — Poster

• Middle School — Essay

• High School — Essay and additional pictures or video

A list of names students can choose from can be found at www.facebook.com/DuryeaCasualtiesofWar.

Students must compose a 60-90 second video essay reflecting on their selected solider’s life, including where their division was engaged, where they were fatally wounded or killed and action and the battle in which their division fought.

With permission from their parent, guardian, or teacher, students are to video record themselves reading their essay or take a picture of their poster and upload it onto the contest’s Facebook page using using their parents’, guardian’s, or teacher’s Facebook page and include the student’s first name and category.

Participants can also take picture or video to the Pittston Library, http://pittstonmemoriallibrary.org/ and it will be uploaded onto the webpage.

The winners selected will be asked to read their essay or display their poster at the dedication of the Casualties of War Memorial in front of the VFW on Stephenson Street.
