WILKES-BARRE — Little Lorenzo couldn’t wait any longer and arrived early New Year’s Day as the Wyoming Valley’s first baby of 2018.
The infant, 19½ inches long and weighing 6 pounds, 3 ounces, and his mother, Courtney, rested in their room at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital late Monday afternoon following a C-section delivery at 6:45 a.m. by Dr. J. Michael Tedesco.
Courtney, 21, of Pittston, who declined to provide her last name, told reporters she knew she was going to have a boy, just not so soon. Her due date was Jan. 6.
“He was ready to come. He made his appearance when he wanted to make his appearance,” she said.
New Year’s Eve was just another day, or so she thought.
“I wasn’t expecting it, but I was scared, obviously, as a first-time mom,” she said.
The media attention made her a bit uncomfortable, Courtney acknowledged. However, she didn’t show it as she held her sleeping son swaddled in a blanket in her arms.
“It’s a memory that he’s not going to remember, but he will remember because it will be talked about,” she said. And there will be photos and videos to remind him of the day of his birth.
Courtney’s mother Veronica, grandmother Mel and Lorenzo’s new uncle Nick, 12, provided plenty of bed-side support. It was Veronica’s first grandchild and Mel’s second great-grandchild.
When she’s discharged, Courtney said she’ll stay at home and look forward to whatever Veronica cooks.
“She wants solid food,” Veronica said.
Lorenzo will share a birthday with Austin who arrived at 10:23 a.m. at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Plains Township. He arrived on his due date. His parents, Kaitlyn and Anthony of Luzerne County, welcomed their first child who weighed 8 pounds and 9 ounces and measured 21 inches long, according to Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center.
