SCRANTON — Joseph Stella, D.O., of Pittston has been appointed Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Geisinger Community Medical Center (GCMC), where he performed his first cardiac operation in 1999.

Dr. Stella is a graduate of Temple University School of Pharmacy and the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his general surgery residency in Norristown at Suburban General Hospital and his cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at Hahnemann University in Philadelphia. He earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the University of Massachusetts.

A Certified Physician Executive, Dr. Stella is a past program director for the General Surgery residency at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center (GWV) in Wilkes-Barre. A member of Geisinger’s Heart Institute, he performs all aspects of adult cardiac surgery, including off-pump coronary artery bypasses, aortic valve and mitral valve surgery, aneurysm surgery and TAVI.

He is married to Lisa Begliomini Stella, a Northeast Pennsylvania native. The couple has three children, Alyssa, Amanda and Joseph.
