LaPorte selected for internship

DALLAS TWP. — Misericordia University communication student Zoe LaPorte, of West Pittston, has been selected for the 10th Annual Online Reporter Project Internship, sponsored by the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association (PNA) in collaboration with the Pennsylvania Society of Editors.

The internship takes place during the PNA’s Pennsylvania Press Conference, a statewide gathering of news editors, reporters and broadcasters, on June 1 and 2 in Gettysburg.

A junior with a double major in mass communications and design and English, LaPorte is scheduled to graduate in December 2019. For the past three years, shehas served as the web editor for The Highlander, the university’s student newspaper.

Kmetz joins Allied Health System

PITTSTON — Allied Services Integrated Health System welcomes Jessica Kmetz, of Pittston, as the new clinic coordinator for the Heinz Pittston Rehab Center.

Kmetz brings with her nearly three years of experience in office and patient coordination.

Aardweg joins NEPA Alliance staff

PITTSTON — Athena Aardweg has joined the Northeastern Pennsylvania Alliance as a Community & Economic Development Specialist.

In this role, Aardweg will provide support to the organization’s Nonprofit & Community Assistance Center and the NEPA Grantmakers Forum.

Before joining NEPA Alliance, Aardweg worked in a variety of roles for organizations across the state, including Information & Referral Specialist in Pittsburgh, Regional Housing Coordinator covering Northeast PA and most recently as the executive director of the Northern Columbia Community & Cultural Center in Benton.

Aardweg holds a bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Shippensburg University, a master’s degree in Social Work and a master’s degree in Public Administration, with a focus on nonprofit management, from the University of Pittsburgh. She resides in Benton.

Residents inducted into honor society

SCRANTON — The folling Greater Pittston residents were recently inducted into Beta Beta Beta, the national honor society for biology at the University of Scranton.

Sergey Gnilopyat, Harding, a junior majoring in biology, cell, molecular biology; Rachel Longo, Hughestown, a senior majoring in biology; Tara Zukosky, Wyoming; a junior majoring in biology.

Patterson inducted into honor society

SCRANTON — Cari Patterson, Pittston, was among The University of Scranton students inducted into Omicron Delta Epsilon, the international honor society in economics.

Walker initiated into honor society

BATON ROUGE, LA — Cristen Walker, Pittston, was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society.

Walker was initiated at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
