EXETER — A business started over 50 years ago by a couple of coal miners in the basement of a home has evolved into one of the area’s most popular destinations for home upgrades.

Voitek TV and Appliances, with locations in Exeter and Kingston, draws customers not only because of the quality of products it offers, but because the family business embodies a sense of service and commitment to community.

David Voitek, Jr. a co-owner of the business, is quick leave his desk in Exeter and help customers determine what product or products are best for them.

Whether it’s a high-end coffee station or a home theater set-up, Voitek Jr. knows the “ins and outs” of how TVs and appliances work, how they would be installed and what customer needs they would fill.

Voitek said the business isn’t driven by the bottom line, but by a sense of family camaraderie passed down by the business’ founder David Voitek Sr., to his children.

Voitek Jr. and his brother Ed oversee operations at the business’ Exeter site, with their sister Nancy at the helm of the Kingston location.

It’s apparent upon meeting Ed Voitek, also a co-owner of the business, that he shares his brother’s commitment to service and to customers.

On a recent afternoon, Ed Voitek was eager to demonstrate a coffee-making station that he, himself, uses at home.

He demonstrated the product by making multiple cups of coffee for anyone who would drink one and suggesting what tasty additions might best suit the particular kind of coffee he had prepared.

“Do you like cinnamon?” he asked someone, suggesting they use a bit of sugar, but not too much sugar.

It is this interaction with customers, coupled with knowledge of the products they Voiteks sell, that keep customers coming back.

And, although David, Ed and Nancy might oversee daily operations of the business, each describes the business as being “our father’s,” quick to credit him with forward thinking that made the success of the business a reality.

“My father and his (late) brother Mark started by fixing televisions in 1958 at night,” he said. “The business soon moved to its Kingston location.”

About 20 years ago, the business added its Exeter location, originally filling a need for additional warehouse space.

A warm reception by Greater Pittston Area residents has made the business a “go to spot” for purchases of TV and appliances for home upgrades and new builds at its second location.

The owners of the business look forward to the future, always willing to respond to customer requests and new trends.

“My son David Voitek III, has also come on board, adding a third generation,” said Voitek Jr.
