AVOCA — The borough will play host to a farmers market starting this summer, council members announced Thursday.

Councilman Mike Fuller brought the idea to council’s attention. He spoke of his desire for the market and what it could mean for the community.

“The idea occurred to me that it might enhance the quality of life in the town if we had a farmers market,” he said during last night’s meeting. “It’s a good source of locally grown food and I think it would be a good thing for the quality of life for the people in the borough.”

Fuller said the plan is to hold the market at the M J Mac Karey Snacks Inc. property on McAlpine Street, saying he’s been in contact with the business owner.

“There’s plenty of parking and a lot of traffic going through the area,” Fuller said. “It’d be a good reason for people to stop there.”

No date has been set for when the market would begin, but Fuller said it would be a weekly event throughout the summer and fall months.

He also noted he has vendors willing to participate.

“I’ve spoken to some vendors and shown them pictures of the location,” Fuller said. “They all feel it’s an ideal place.”

Council president John Boone said he is on board with the idea and insisted that Fuller take the reins on the project.

“He’s working on it and the borough will support him in any way we can,” Boone said. “I think it’s a great thing.”

In other business, council members approved:

• The appointment of Kevin O’Brien Sr. as Avoca’s Emergency Management Coordinator.

• The appointment of Kevin O’Brien Jr. as Deputy Director of Emergency Management.

• A donation of $50 to the Pittston Area High School Class of 1967 and its 50th reunion celebration. The money will pay for a half-page ad in the program booklet.

• Street-sweeping services from DBI Services for a date to be determined in May.
