DURYEA — The efforts of borough police and street workers during Winter Storm Stella did not go unnoticed as council members and residents thanked them during a public meeting Tuesday.

Stella dropped more than 2 feet of snow on the borough, but both departments earned the praises of those in attendance for keeping things running smoothly.

Council President Lois Hanczyc specifically thanked the street crew for keeping the roads passable.

“I would just like to thank the road department,” she said. “I commend them for the great job they did during the snowstorm.”

One member of the audience, who also praised borough workers, asked council how much it cost to remove the snow.

Borough Manager Carolyn Santee said a final tally has yet to be compiled, but there might be grants available to assist.

The hard part is obtaining the grants, she said.

“There may be money available, but we have to jump on it as soon as we can because there are other places that want the money,” said Santee.

Also due to the storm, council members voted 6-1, with Mike McGlynn voting no, to temporarily close Healey Playground and the Community Park until the majority of the snow melts.

“It’s a safety issue,” Hanczyc said.

In other business, council members:

• Hired nine part-time police officers for the month of April.

• Approved a request by Pennsylvania American Water to place two fire hydrants at Blueberry Estates.

• Approved Sunday, April 2, as “Get Moving Duryea” Day. The vote was 6-1 with council member Audrey Marcinko voting no.

• Donated $100 to Germania Fire Hose Co. to assist in an Easter egg hunt.
