District 2 is on its third set of dates and second site as it prepares to attempt to get its cross country championships settled with limited time remaining for state meet preparations.
After being moved from Lakeland High School in Lackawanna County to the Wyoming County Fairgrounds in Meshoppen because of precautions at the school related to the increase in coronavirus (COVID-19) cases, the meets were given new dates.
Those dates were changed in anticipation of the poor course conditions Thursday and Friday’s weather would have created.
The girls championships are now scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 29 with the boys races planned Monday.
On both days, the schedule calls for a 9:30 a.m. Class 3A race, followed by Class A at 12:30 p.m. and Class 2A at 3:30 p.m.
Pittston Area competes in Class 3A and Wyoming Area in Class 2A.
In all races, the team winner and best five other individuals will qualify for the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state championships. Because of the differences in field sizes, the top 10 in Class 3A will receive medals, the top 15 in Class A and the top 20 in Class 2A.
As part of safety precautions, no spectators will be allowed at the races.
During Wednesday’s Board of Directors meeting, the PIAA reversed its earlier position and decided to allow spectators on a limited basis for the state championships.
With six races spread out over the day Saturday at the Hershey Parkview Course, schools will be issued four colored wristbands per runner to distribute to spectators. The color-coding will be used to assure that those spectators stay at the site for just one race.
