Holy Redeemer won the District 2 championship and reached the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state tournaments in three sports with Greater Pittston athletes contributing to the success.
The Royals were scheduled to put their unbeaten record on the line in the state Class 2A boys volleyball quarterfinals Saturday. Jack Broda is part of that lineup for the team that also won the Wyoming Valley Conference title.
Drew Cisney and Nick Mazzarella were two of the leaders of a 19-4 baseball team that also included Dominic Marranca and Connor Krakosky. Katie Genovese was on the softball team.
Broda entered the quarterfinal fifth on the team with 26 blocks and seventh in kills with 32. He also had 55 digs.
Holy Redeemer swept Carver Engineering & Science from Philadelphia in Tuesday’s first round of the state tournament by scores of 25-16, 25-17, 25-19. Broda had one kill in the match.
The Royals were facing York Suburban Saturday.
Cisney and Mazzarella were two of the three main pitchers for the Royals, who went 11-1 to win WVC Division 2 by three full games.
Cisney led the team in strikeouts by a pitcher and in stolen bases.
Mazzarella led the team in pitching wins and doubles.
Cisney was 3-1 with a save, a 1.94 earned run average and 48 strikeouts in 36 innings. He also batted .293 with 12 stolen bases, 14 runs and 11 RBI.
Mazzarella went 6-0 with a 1.54 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 36 1/3 innings. He had five doubles while batting .231.
Marranca, a freshman, was second on the team with 21 runs scored. He drove in 13 runs while batting .259.
Krakosky was 1-for-3 at the plate. He stole two bases and scored five times.
Genovese was third on the softball team in runs scored with 23 and in RBI with 22. She had seven doubles and two triples while batting .338.
The Lady Royals finished second in WVC Division 2 with a 10-2 record.
