KINGSTON — It took 83 minutes for the Orange team to score. It took Mia Barbieri only 83 seconds to score two.
The Pittston Area defensive midfielder scored back-to-back goals to lead the Orange to a 2-1 victory over Lime Monday at the Wyoming Valley Conference Coaches Senior Girls Soccer All-Star Classic.
“It’s just great, honestly. Both groups of girls were great to play with,” Barbieri said. “I played against them all four years of high school. It’s crazy to see we’re already here in senior year.”
It was a bittersweet sendoff for Barbieri. Before scoring in the 83rd and 84th minutes, she had just one goal in the entire regular season.
Trailing by one, Barbieri pounced on a rebound off of a shot to even the score in the middle of the box.
Moments later, Wyoming Seminary’s Alyssa Kristeller hit the post from the left side. Wyoming Valley West’s Riley O’Neil delivered a clean cross across the middle to Barbieri. Barbieri postmarked a hard-struck shot to the corner from 15 yards for the eventual game-winning goal.
“I actually never played forward in my four years of high school,” Barbieri said. “From playing for so long, I kind of know what to do. But to actually do it, it’s nerve-wracking.”
Barbieri tore her ACL during her sophomore year. She battled through her injuries to make the second team of the WVC Coaches All-Stars as a junior and first team as a senior.
“It’s just a blessing to even come back and play at all,” she said. “To have it end this way is even better.
Coughlin’s Skyler Panattieri ended 55 minutes of scoreless action with a superb finish to give Lime a 1-0 lead. Holy Redeemer’s Nicole Cavanaugh sent a 30-yard through ball that pierced through the Orange defense to set up Panattieri’s chance.
Pittston Area goalkeeper Taryn Ashby made a game-saving stop in the 90th minute off of an Autumn Kaminski, of Holy Redeemer, shot.
Uncommon for a senior all-star game, defense prevailed for both teams.
Lime’s Julia Adams, of Holy Redeemer, made the only highlight of the first half with a tackle on Ashby in the 35th.
Meyers’ goalkeeper Devon Keiper made three outstanding saves in a five-minute span. Wyoming Seminary’s Breanna Satkowski had two shots punched away by the Kiwi keeper. O’Neil’s breakaway chance was sent away in the 64th.
Wyoming Valley West keeper Danielle Cook made a pair of short-ranged saves for Orange.
Dallas’ Abe Lewis served as an assistant to end his coaching career.
