PITTSTON — It’s the time of year for resolutions and, for many, that means making the first step toward physical fitness: joining a new gym.

The Greater Pittston YMCA hopes to capture the eyes of those still looking for a gym to call home with recent improvements.

The facility has undergone a major overhaul of its wellness center and spin room. Upgrades include 20 new stationary bikes in the spin room and nearly all new equipment in the wellness center, from dumbbells and benches to rowers and multi-purpose machines. The upgrades also include a new core workout and stretching room.

“It’s definitely a long overdue upgrade,” said Michaelene Mecadon, Health and Wellness Director at the YMCA.

Mecadon believes the upgrades will help YMCA members get the most out of their membership. “I think people are going to take advantage of the new equipment to the best of their abilities, especially at the start of a new year,” she said.

The YMCA sees an influx of new members around the start of each year, which it calls “resolutioners.” Mecadon hopes the improvements will encourage the newcomers to remain members for the long haul.

“We offer more than any other gym around here — we have a pool; we have a wellness center; we have spin classes; we have child care while you’re working out and I feel like that’s something that makes us so unique compared to other gyms,” she said. “I just think you’re going to get the most out of your membership here.”

Mecadon believes taking a spin class with the new bikes is a great way to take advantage of the upgrades, for both new and existing members.

“I feel like spin is intimidating to a lot of people and it doesn’t have to be,” she said. “Everyone around you is going to help you. That’s my favorite part about The Y.”

Class information

Spin classes are offered Monday through Friday at 5:45 a.m. and 5:15 p.m., Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8:15 a.m., Tuesday and Thursday at 9:15 a.m., Saturday at 9 a.m. and Sunday at 10:15 a.m.

As with all group exercise classes, spin classes are free with a YMCA membership. Non-members are invited to attend for a $5 fee that may be paid at the front desk.

Members who would like to get familiar with the new workout equipment in the wellness center can sign up for a free personal training session at the front desk, as well.
