February 2005
The Seton Catholic boys basketball team used defense and rebounding in a 43-33 win over Forest City in the second round PIAA District 2 Class A championships.
Ian Gilmartin had 24 rebounds and blocked seven shots. Forest City was held to just one field goal in the final five minutes.
Dave Kaluzavich scored a game-high 15 points. Seton would advance to play Bishop Hannon.
February 1995
Jared Rehill’s 20-point performance led the Pittston Area boys basketball team to a 60-51 win over Honesdale in the PIAA District 2 Class AAAA first round.
Scott Appel finished with 16 points while Adam Rahman and Matt Dessoye each hit for nine.
The Patriots advanced to play Coughlin.
February 1985
Pittston Area’s Rob Sefchik set a Pittston Area record with a time of 51.82 in the 100 backstroke. The record came in an 88-66 loss to Valley View.
In the same week, Wyoming Area’s girls team won its 10th meet of the season. Nadine Pribula and Cindy Butcofski led the assault in a 96-76 win over Bishop Hoban. The Warriors outswam Hoban in eight of the 11 events.
February 1975
The Wyoming Area girls basketball team took a 55-33 win over rival Pittston Area. The game was close until the Warriors broke through with a 24-4 advantage in the final quarter.
Wyoming Area’s Gemma Mehalchik led all scorers with 14 points, while Cathy Pope had 13. Marlene Mariggi had 12 points for the Patriots, while Lorraine Bartush had 10.
Denise Marianacci and Sandy Selenski each hauled in 15 rebounds for the Warriors.
February 1965
The West Pittston Rams were honored by the Rams Booster Club following the final home game of the season.
The Rams, coached by Jimmy Atherton, rattled of 22 straight games to reach the PIAA Class “B” playoffs as a matchup with Forest City or Swoyersville on the horizon.
At the time, Joe Cefalo led West Pittston in scoring. The Rams led the Valley League in defense allowing only 54.7 points per game.
February 1955
Duryea High School captured its fifth straight East Anthracite League boys basketball championship by taking down Avoca at the Avoca American Legion court.
