Seton Catholic’s girls basketball team picked up two key wins in Wyoming Valley Conference Division 3 play as it beat Bishop Hafey, 71-25, and routed Hanover Area.
Against Hafey, Tina Durako scored 22 points while Sara Hunter added 13. Against Hanover, Brittany Dobbs finished with 16 and Hunter 14.
Pittston Area and Wyoming Area each lost two games in the week. Emilee Strubeck scored a career-high 20 points in a loss to Crestwood.
January 1995
The Pittston Area boys basketball team beat Hazleton Area, 58-56, in what would be one of the biggest upsets in the Wyoming Valley Conference all season.
Pittston Area was coming off a 55-point loss to Bishop Hafey. Scott Appel scored a team-high 16 points to lead the Patriots over the Cougars.
In the last minute, Jared Rehill hit a clutch shot and Tom Biscotti hit both ends of a one-and-one with less than 40 seconds left to seal the win.
January 1985
Seton Catholic’s Alan Dommes hit a free throw with one second remaining to lift the Eagles to a 59-58 win over Lake-Lehman.
Eagle big man Ed Farrell finished with a game-high 21 points. Joe Lavelle scored 13. Dommes eventually finished with nine points, while Dave Carey and Paul Orzel finished with seven each.
January 1975
Wyoming Area’s George Oschal, averaging 25 points a game for the Warriors, scored a game-high 20 points in a win over Nanticoke.
The Warriors won 81-69 to put the “A” Division of the Wyoming Valley Conference in a five-way tie.
January 1965
West Pittston’s Joe Cefalo scored a game-high 24 points in a rout over Edwardsville. John Williamson scored 19 points to aid the Rams’ effort.
The Rams scored over 100 points twice in the week. They beat Edwardsville, 109-60. West Pittston scored 114 points in a win over Forty Fort. John Serino had 25 points against Forty Fort.
