This issue marks the first of the Sunday Dispatch’s 68th year in business.

The Dispatch has certainly had its ups and downs. And it very nearly didn’t make it.

The paper did not start in an easy period. It was February 1947. There was a daily newspaper in Greater Pittston, the Pittston Gazette, and a Thursday newspaper, the Pittston Bulletin.

Many people predicted the Dispatch would never get off the ground.

The Sunday Dispatch was originally owned by the family of the late John C. Kehoe Sr. Ever see that mansion on Route 92 in Harding? That was Kehoe’s house. In 1964, William Watson Sr. and his son, William Jr., bought out the Kehoe family stock and took over ownership of the newspaper.

We may be bragging a little that we’re turning 68 this week. Justifiably, it is a moment of pride for the staff of the Dispatch and those who have been associated with it over the decades.

But we couldn’t have gotten here without you.

For nearly seven decades, the people of Greater Pittston have been good to the Sunday Dispatch. They have been a part of the Dispatch by allowing us to share their stories. And the Sunday Dispatch, we believe, is certainly a part of the majority of the lives of Greater Pittstonians. The paper has supported many worthy causes from church groups to charitable organizations to Little League and the students of our high schools.

We’re thrilled to be a part of your life and we thank you for being a part of ours.
