February 2005

Crestwood’s boys basketball team needed two overtime periods to take down Wyoming Area, 52-49, in Exeter. Coming into the game, Wyoming Area sat at 5-2, while Crestwood was 6-1.

Crestwood led 6-0 to start the game, but Wyoming Area scored the next 12 points. Guy Fasciana and Brett Sokirka each finished with 14 points. Sokirka scored 11 in the second half.

February 1995

Pittston Area wrestler Tony Barbrie recorded his 100th career win as a varsity wrestler.

At 160 pounds, Barbrie pinned a West Side Tech wrestler in 1:18 to achieve the milestone. Barbrie improved to 20-1 on the season and 100-14 in his career.

Barbrie became the second Pittston Area wrestler to earn 100 wins. The first was his brother, Frank. He reached 100 wins during the 1993 season.

Pittston Area won the match, 53-12.

February 1985

The Pittston Area boys basketball team upended Wyoming Area, 58-45, to go 2-1 in the first half. The Warriors fell to 0-3.

The Patriots led from start to finish and were guided by Shawn Queeney’s 19 points. Pat Walker finished the game with 18 points, while Dave Grobinski had 13 for the winners.

Wyoming Area sophomore Rob Cella managed 12 points, while Joe Nocito netted 11. Mark Griglock scored six points for the Warriors.

February 1975

St. John’s boys basketball player John Hannon became the second player in the history of the school to crack 1,000 career points. He did it in the first period of a 61-57 upset win over GAR. The senior forward was a three-year starter for the Johnnies.

Hannon hit a pair of free throws to get his milestone. He finished the game with 24 points. Junior guard Joe LoBrutto accounted for 18 points, while John Baker chipped in 11.

The only other St. John’s player to cop the fete was Ned Bilbow.

February 1965

West Pittston’s boys basketball team won the first half championship of the Wyoming Valley League with a 54-38 over the Northwest Rangers in Shickshinny.

With four minutes to play, Northwest’s Mike Cavallini scored to make it 39-38 in favor of West Pittston. That bucket was the last for the Rangers. The Rams scored the game’s final 15 points – Gene Lepore and Ray Judge combined for those final 15 points in the win.

February 1955

In the final game of the first half in the Wyoming Valley League, Wyoming’s boys basketball team stopped West Pittston to claim fourth in the league.

The game was decided in overtime. West Pittston held a 52-51 lead late in the extra period, but Wyoming’s Eddie Koslock made the game-winning bucket to take the win. Joe Kotz added an insurance free throw for the game’s final score.

Reno Morgan scored 10 points, while Jack Fenner netted 13 for Wyoming. Gordy Williams and Joe Miller each scored 13 points for West Pittston.
