The 2014 FIFA World Cup is already a month past. But the Bucky Harris Sports Complex in Hughestown turned into a scene straight from Brazil on Saturday.

A total of 16 teams competed for the annual Patriot Cup. Teams from Pittston Area, Wyoming Area, Dallas, Holy Redeemer, Hanover, Scranton Prep, Wyoming Valley West, Lake-Lehman, Crestwood, Wallenpaupack and Coughlin took to the fields.

The Cup is a boys and girls tournament which awarded championships for each gender Saturday night.

Years ago, the Cup was strictly an indoor tournament for girls. A few years later it turned into an outdoor tournament for boys. Last year, because of the realignment of the PIAA and girls soccer being played in the fall, the tournament was open to boys and girls teams.

Along with plenty of competitive action, spectators also found homemade food like broccoli and shells, buffalo chicken sandwiches, travelling tacos and hot dogs and hamburgers. Baked desserts and T-shirts were also available for sale.

Proceeds of this tournament help to support the Pittston Area Soccer Booster Club. The Pittston Area Soccer Booster Club supports both the boys and girls high school teams as well as the middle school’s co-ed soccer team. The club would like to thank everyone in the local community for their continued support and kind donations.
