From only two wins a season ago, the Pittston Area girls softball team has come a long way.
Although the Patriots were bounced in the first round of the PIAA District 2 Class AAA championships against Honesdale, the progress this young team made is tremendous.
Honesdale’s Amber Watkins and Stacey Hart each drove in four runs to lead the seventh-seeded Hornets into the quarterfinals.
Julie Silinskie drove in the Patriots only run with a single in the second inning. Silinskie, along with Lauren Dragon and Taryn Ashby also collected hits for the 10th-seeded Patriots.
The game was called in the third inning due to the 15-run rule.
Pittston Area’s 2013 season was one to forget. The Patriots won just two games a year ago. But here in 2014, the Patriots have shown some serious signs of improvement.
The team got off to one of the best starts in recent history. The Patriots rattled off wins in their first two games – a 9-6 win over Coughlin in the opener and a 9-8 walk-off win over Wyoming Valley West. Just two games into the season, the Patriots matched last year’s win total.
But the Patriots weren’t done there.
Pittston Area used a game-ending double play to finish off Crestwood, 3-2, and improve to an impressive 3-0.
