Duryea American Legion Post 585 will have live entertainment at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Sept 27 in which Traffic Jam will perform. These events are open to the public and all members in good standing. No cover charge. Kitchen will be open.

Blessing of animals

The blessing of animals to honor St. Francis of Assisi will be held from 10:30 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4 at St. Mary’s Polis National Catholic Church, 200 Stephenson St.

Chicken BBQ slated for Oct. 18

St. Mary’s Parish will hold a chicken barbecue from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18 at St. Mary’s Parish on 200 Stephenson St., Duryea.

Dinners include half chicken, bakes potato, green beans and roll with butter coleslaw. Tickets are $12 take out only. Tickets may be pre-ordered by calling 570-457-2291. Tickets will also be available at the door.

School taxes mailed

Martin Hanczyc, borough tax collector, advises residents that the 2014 school taxes have been mailed. Anyone who has not received their tax statement should contact him at 570-457-2482. Office hours during rebate period are 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday and 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the borough building or by appointment by calling the number listed above. Residents are also advised, that if home bound, to call the above number to have taxes picked up at their homes.

Yard waste

Duryea Borough Street Department will collect yard waste on Fridays. Leaves can be placed in plastic bags that are not tied. Grass cannot be placed in plastic bags. Branches must be cut in four-foot sections and can be no larger than two inches in diameter. Branches can be placed in a container or bundled. Shrubs and clippings will be collected.

Duryea Borough yard waste is recycled at the Greater Regional Compost Center in Dupont. All yard waste is shredded into mulch. Rocks and dirt cannot be mixed in with the yard waste. The rocks and dirt are breaking the grinders of the shredder. Shrubs will not be picked up if there is a dirt ball on the roots.
