The Greater Pittston Historical Society will host a kayak excursion on the Susquehanna River today starting at 10 a.m. from the Apple Tree boat access along Rte. 92 in Harding and ending at Nesbitt Park in Kingston.
The tour will include a stop at the Conrail Site archaeological dig near Coxton Yards. A second stop is scheduled at Riverfront Park in Pittston where guests will enjoy lunch inside Cooper’s Waterfront while listening to a presentation on the history of the river given by Harding native and former Penn State professor Richard Fitzsimmons.
Historical points of interest along the route include Campbell’s Ledge, Coxton Railroad Yard, Coxton Bridge, the archaeological site, the site of the Twin Shaft Disaster, Scovell Island, Jenkins Fort, Pittston Fort, the Fort Jenkins Bridge, the 100-year old Water Street Bridge, the site of the Knox Mine Disaster, and many more.
“This is the first time we’re holding this event, but the response from the public has far outgrown our expectations,” said Ron Faraday, president of Greater Pittston Historical Society. “As of Wednesday at 2 p.m. there were 66 registrants and the outfitter (Endless Mountain Outfitters) was still fielding calls.”
