Pittston Library
The Pittston Memorial Library is located at 47 Broad St., Pittston. The phone number is 570-654-9565. Email the library at pittstonlibrary@yahoo.com. Hours of operation are Monday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. The library is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Children’s Book Week will be held from May 12 -16. All week, the library will have raffles plus children are invited to complete a story starter to win prizes. Story starters are for children age 6 and up and are available at the front desk.
A free estate planning event will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 8 open to all residents of the community. The event is entitled “Wills and Living Trusts: How to protect your assets and provide for your loved ones.” Call the library 570-654-9565 to register.
A representative from Pittston Chiropractic wil be at the library from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 8 doing complimentary health assessments for adults and children.
Meet children’s author Amy Faatz at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 15. Faatz is a local resident who recently published the book “Oliver Knows All About The Moon, Do You?” She will read her book, meet with the children and do an activity based on the book.
Children in grades one to five are welcome to stop by the library to pick up story starters which allows them to finish a story using their own imagination. Awards will be given for the most creative stories. Deadline to enter is Tuesday, May 13.
The Crochet Club meets at 10 a.m. every Tuesday and at 5 p.m. every Thursday.
The Science Club will meet at 4 p.m. on Thrusday, May 15. This will be the last meeting until the fall all.
The next Friends meetings are set for 6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 19.
The Adult Book Club will meet at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 22. “The Secret Life of Bees” will be discussed. Refreshments will be served.
A beginner computer class will be held at 10 a.m. every Thursday. Call the library to register.
The Craft Club for children ages 7 and up will meet at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, May 12. Journals from well-loved kids books will be made. Call 570-654-9565 to register. This is the last meeting until Fall.
The next Friends of the Pittston Memorial Library meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 19.
The Lego Club for children age 3 and up will meet from 4 to 5 p.m. every Monday.
TAG, the library’s Teen Advisory Group, meet at 5:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month.
West Pittston
The West Pittston Library is located at 200 Exeter Ave., West Pittston.
Baking for our Four-Legged Friends will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, May 12 at the First United Methodist Church, Wyoming Avenue, West Pittston. Coas is $10.Treats will be made for our furry companions. Nikki will teach us how to make healthy treats for our best friends as well as foods to avoid keeping our pets healthy. Selling on eBay: The Basics will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14. Join Maria Juinta Heck as she takes you through the basics of setting up your own account, tips for taking photos and descriptions to maximize sale potential. Registration is required for this free program.
Stress-Less Short Story Session: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle will be at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 22. The stories are “The Brazilian Cat,” “Fiend of the Cooperage,” “Terror of the Blue John Gap,” “The Sign of Four,” and “Captain Sharkey.” Share thoughts, musings, factoids and cookies! The helpful staff of the WPL can get a copies of the books. Registration is required for this free program.
American Girl Party will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 17. An afternoon celebration will be held for Girl of the Year for 2014, Isabelle, ballerina and fashion designer. Enjoy excerpts from the latest American Girl book, participate in theme-related crafts and activities, and break for a snack. Children must be 8 or older. All participants must bring a T-shirt that will be cut and wear comfortable attire. Registration is required for this free program.
Oral histories will be presented from members of the Veteran’s Voices Writing Workshop. This past month, they have been writing about their personal experiences in the military. Join in learning about their experiences while honoring their service to our country. Registration is recommended for this free program. Weekly Story Time is at 1 p.m. every Friday. Introduce children to the library and get them interested in books with our Weekly Story Time. Each Story Time includes books, songs and crafts related to that week’s theme. Please sign up by Wednesday of each week for this free program.
One Book Every Young Child will be at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13. This statewide annual program highlights the importance of early literacy development in preschoolers age 3-6. This year’s selection is Stripes of All Types by Susan Stockdale. At the program children will hear the story as well as engage in book-related activities and crafts. Each child will go home with a copy of the book. This program is limited to 10 families; siblings will take home one copy. Registration is required for this free program.
