Pittston

This is the final week of Summer Reading programs at Pittston Memorial Library. The last day to report minutes read is Aug. 8. The library will have an end of summer reading party for the children that participated from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 11. Call the library to register 570-654-9565.

The library will close at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 7, and Thursday, Aug. 21, and also on Saturday, Aug. 23, for the Tomato Festival Parade.

A Book Sale will be conducted from 2 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28.

Friday, Sept. 5, is the Friends Fall Festival which includes a book sale, bake sale, tag sale and craft sale plus refreshments.

Greater Pittston Charity Train Ride to historic Jim Thorpe will Sunday, Sept. 28. A 1920 era Open Window Coach will be pulled by a diesel locomotive. Limited seating is available. For more information contact Kelly at 570-457-6558.

West Pittston

*Making Comic Books 101 – Thursday, Aug. 21, at 6 p.m.

Who hasn’t read, or come across, a comic at some point in their life? Many people enjoy this popular literary art form but few know how they are really made. Join local artist Jeff Evans to learn how to make a comic page by creating your very own! There are no supplies needed but all are encouraged to bring any materials they prefer such as pens, pencils etc. Ages 14 and up. Registration is required for this free program.

*Stress-Less Short Story Session: H.G. Wells – Thursday, Aug. 28, at 6 p.m.

Don’t stress! Even if you haven’t read the stories, join us to discuss five H.G. Wells short stories. The stories we’ll be reading are: “The Magic Shop,” “The Diamond Maker,” “The Valley of the Spiders,” “In the Avu Observatory” and “The Flowering of the Strange Orchid.” We’ll share thoughts, musings, factoids and cookies! If you don’t have the stories, the ever-helpful staff of the WPL can get a copy for you. Registration is required for this free program.

Laflin Library

The Laflin Public Library’s summer reading program will soon be coming to a close. Books will need to be returned to the library by Wednesday, Aug. 6 so that they may be recorded in the children’s book logs.

A pizza party will be held at the playground behind the Laflin Borough building at noon on Saturday, Aug. 9, for all the children who participated. The children will also receive a reading certificate and a prize of their choice for their reading accomplishment.
