Two days left until the general election is history and I’m sure we are all a bit overwhelmed with the printed literature that has been stuffed in our mailboxes.
Just the other day, I saw my mailman and asked him if he will be relieved once Nov. 5 comes and goes and he said, “You have no idea.”
I think I have more flyers with the faces of Jimmy Haddock, Rob Bresnahan, and Matt Cartwright on them, then I have photos of my own children.
I don’t think the Republicans or the Democrats are the winners of this election — it’s the print shops and TV stations. They must have cleaned up on this year’s general election.
So on Wednesday, we can collectively take a deep breath and sigh of relief we won’t have to see on more political advertisement.
Even though we won’t see political ads, I’m going to out on a limb and say we won’t hear the end of the election results. Time will tell, so enough said about that.
On the local level, I’m told both parties have dished out an obscene amount of money for a seat in Congress. The PA 8th Congressional District is probably THE most heated race in the country.
It’s always amazed me how all things and people in this country go through NEPA and to narrow that down, Greater Pittston and Wyoming Valley.
We are a unique area and time-after-time we get reminded of that.
There is one thing that bugs me about what is always pinned on us is that we are living in the worst period of life. The country has been ruined. One side blames the other side by one party and when the other party is in power, then they are the ones ruining the country.
I don’t know, I look around and I’m hard pressed to see things where we, as a nation, is economically suppressed.
Restaurants are filled, no matter if they are a moderately-priced restaurant or a higher-priced establishment.
We all still drive nice cars, live in nice cozy homes, and if Amazon didn’t overtake retail and systematically put shopping malls all over the country out of business, I’d say people are still out shopping for clothing and other goods.
I will even venture to guess, this coming Christmas season will set some kind of spending record on gifts. Are we in bad financial shape? Hardly.
What I do believe is a pandemic happened and for a good period of time, we as a county and in fact, the world had to recover.
Is that our issue now? I don’t believe so, I believe manufacturers are looking to up profits by raising prices and shrinking packaging while charging the same price as the previously sized package.
A few weeks ago, I mentioned how you would purchase a half-gallon of ice cream and then the half-gallon was 1.5 quarts. Now the packaging has shrunk again and a “half-gallon” of ice cream is 1.44 quarts.
Toilet tissue has shrunk as well. They have taken at least one inch off the width of the roll. What’s up with that?
I first took note of product shrinkage while charging the same prices as the old packaging with boxed cereal.
Manufacturers left and right are deceiving us and here’s my question, why are we blaming politicians for manufacturer greed?
That’s as bad as blaming any sitting president when the price of gas rises. Don’t you think the President of the United States would reduce the cost of gas at the pump for, at least, the people of the U.S.A. if that were the case?
Even when a president releases oil from the country’s reserve, the price of gas doesn’t go down — and even if it does, it’s not much.
My friends, don’t be fooled by rhetoric and lies from candidates. Or at least read through them and use logic and common sense in your decision when entering the voting booth on Tuesday.
Study the facts, research what you believe are the biggest issues for you and your family. Forget party and vote what makes sense and what’s best for you.
But most of all, vote.
Each and every election it boggles my mind on how many registered voters there are against the small percentage that actually vote. American Idol and Dancing with the Stars gets way more voting then people doing their Constitutional duty in voting.
Since I’ve been 18-years old, I’ve never missed a voting opportunity and I’d feel guilty if I were to miss one.
It’s said voting is a civic sacrament.
