Reading Wonderland is Dec. 11

PITTSTON — The annual Reading Wonderland will be held at the Pittston Area High School, 5 Stout St., Yatesville, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 11. The day will include literacy activities, crafts, free pictures with Santa, and snacks. This event is free and open to all children from infant to fourth grade residing in The Greater Pittston Area School District.

The Friends of the Pittston Memorial Library will hold their yearly Book Fair at Barnes and Noble Arena Hub in Wilkes Barre. from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10 and Sunday, Dec. 11. A percentage of all purchases made this day, both in store and online, go back to the library as a gift card for books and other items. The Friends will also sell chances for their Gift Card Tree worth over $450. The store number for the library is 11953361 for any online purchases on the designated dates.

Children ages 18 months to 5 can bring their grownup to the library for a story, craft and free play from 6 to 6:45 p.m. Monday evenings. Registration is required. This session concludes Monday, Dec. 12.

Interactive Book Club will meet from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12. This club is for teens in grade 6-12 and focuses on a new book each month and engages in fun activities based on the book. For more information, call the library.

Tales on Tuesday with Miss Kristin will conclude Tuesday, Dec. 13. This program features age appropriate stories, songs, activities, and free play for infants, toddlers and pre-school aged children. Books and Babies for ages newborn to 18 months is at 9:30 a.m.; Terrific Twos for ages 18 months to 3 years is at 10:30 a.m.; Preschool Pals ages 3 to 5 is at 11:30 a.m. Registration is required.

This holiday season, keep an eye out for the library’s Giving Tree. All the items on the tree will be donations for books or DVDs for the library.

The library’s holiday hours are as follows:

Thursday, Dec. 22 and Friday, Dec. 23 – 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Saturday, Dec. 24 through Monday, Dec. 26 – closed

Saturday, Dec. 31 – closed.

Celebrate Noon Year’s Eve from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 29. This will be a celebration with games and other fun events for the countdown until noon. This free program is for children in kindergarten through fifth grade and registration is required by calling the library. Space is limited.

The library now has the following fall hours in place:

Monday and Thursday – Noon to 7 p.m.

Wednesday – Closed

Tuesday and Friday – 9 to 4 p.m.

Saturday – 9 to 4 p.m.

Lego Club meets Mondays from 4 to 5 p.m. Library provides the Legos, but adult supervision is required and participants are required to help clean up.

Volunteer opportunities are available at the library. Opportunities include helping in the library, or with the Friends of the Pittston Memorial Library group. If interested, fill out a volunteer form at the front desk.

Adult Coloring Club meets at 1 p.m. every Friday and on scheduled evenings.

Adult computer classes will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. every Thursday. The class goes over email, mouse skills and web surfing. Registration is required by calling the library.

The Crochet Club meets from 10 to 11:45 a.m. every Tuesday. Participants are asked to bring their own supplies including a hook sized I, J, or K yarn.

The Wee Build program is held Thursdays at 6 p.m. and Fridays at 10 a.m. for children ages 1 through 11. The new toys used promote development in many skills and allow children to express themselves through play. Stop by the library and start building.

Board games for all ages are available at the front desk and can be used anytime.

The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Program at the library is free and open to all children in the community from birth to kindergarten. The child will receive a bag with an age-appropriate book to keep in his or her collection.

WEST PITTSTON LIBRARY

Make Christmas ornaments Dec. 15

WEST PITTSTON — Children are invited to the library at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15 to make various ornaments and enjoy hot chocolate, treats and holiday stories. They can also dress in pajamas.

The Library Laboratory is back to continue engaging kids ages 9 and up in science-based, hands-on learning activities. Measure, mix, compare, experiment and test in a fun environment. Class size is limited so sign up early.

*January – Believe it when you see it – 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10. Merge two pictures to become one, create a 3D hand drawing.

*February – Upcycled cardboard – 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7. Create projects from cardboard tubes and paper cups.

Children are invited to the library in their pajamas and bring their favorite stuffed animal at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19 for an evening of stories, games, songs and crafts. When it’s time to say goodnight, the fuzzy friends will spend the night. Pick up time will be from noon to 12:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20. Only one stuffed animal per child, first 24 children only.

Teens are invited to the library at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24 to make their own spices to add to hot chocolate.

Participants can come to the library at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11 and spend the afternoon crafting a variety of creations to take home. Choose from an origami monster corner bookmark, miniature clay charm, tissue paper flowers, thumbprint dandelion and handprint ice-cream cones.

Join Jamie Flack, owner of home décor store Rustique in Kingston, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13 for a hands-on demonstration that will showcase how Chalk Paint can be used in a number of ways. Jamie will walk participants through four beginner techniques: distressed finish, smooth finish, rustic finish and color wash. This program costs $75 which includes light refreshments and materials, including paint, brushes, waxes and sandpaper. Receive a voucher for 10% off all Annie Sloan products at the store for attending and complementary wine during the program.

The Love Stinks Chocolate Festival will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14. Model a broken heart with chocolate plastic, indulge in a blind chocolate taste test, play M&M mancala, write unromantic magnetic poetry and create a few “Ten Worst…” lists.

The library, in conjunction with the Junior League of Wilkes Barre, will bring a program to introduce kids to the kitchen. The program will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22. In this program kids of all ages will learn to measure, spread, whisk, slice and eat in a healthy way and will cover basic nutrition with a food group relay race and have books available to explore the topics further. Each child will make their own Antipasto Salad Skewer appetizer and a healthy hummus and cucumber lunch wrap with copies of the recipes to take home. To participate in this program, each child will need to supply their own butter knife, cutting knife, cutting board, small mixing bowl, measuring spoons and whisk. Limited to the first 10 kids.

Join Children’s Program Coordinator Summer Belles from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23 in creating an infinity scarf out of chunky yarn using just your arms. Bring 2-3 skeins of yarn—the chunkier.

Kindergarten Readiness Program is held at 1 p.m. every Friday. This early-literacy enhanced program is designed to introduce children to the library, get them interested in books and develop the skills needed for school. Parents can spend some fun one-on-one time with their child, or grandchild, as we read books together, sing songs, play games and make crafts centered around the weekly, kid-friendly theme. Learn pre-reading techniques that can be done at home to enhance their skills. Register by Wednesday of each week.

WYOMING FREE LIBRARY

Tea, Tips and Treasures concludes Dec. 17

WYOMING — The last Tea, Tips and Treasures program for the year will be a Christmas party with a snowman theme held at noon Saturday, Dec. 17. Children ages 3 and up will enjoy Christmas fun and holiday snacks. This program is free, but space is limited. Call the library to register.

A holiday wish list tree has been set up at the library. Patrons can choose an ornament from the tree and purchase the book in honor of a friend or family member. An honorarium book plate will be placed in the book. The wish list has a variety of titles to choose from. Contact the library for more information.

Reading help will be available at the library for children in grades 1-4 from 1 to 3 p.m. every Wednesday. Call the library to register.

The Literary Snoops Book Club meets at noon the second Wednesday of east month. Participants are encouraged to bring a bag lunch for the discussion.

Gingerbread house decorating is Dec. 19

LAFLIN — Laflin Book Discussion Group will meet at 7 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 19 to discuss their final book in the fall series, “The Dive” from Clausen’s Pier.
