Old Man Winter is one again preparing to visit the Wyoming Valley, as snow and mixed precipitation are predicted for the weekend.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Luzerne County, effective from 7 p.m. Friday until 7 p.m. Saturday.
Moderate snow is expected late Friday night through midday Saturday. Precipitation will change over to mixed precipitation through Saturday afternoon as the temperatures climb. Winds could also gust as high as 40 mph.
A winter weather advisory means periods of snow, sleet, or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties.
The forecast
The National Weather Service indicated it was 9 degrees as of 6:54 a.m. at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport, and fair skies were reported. The wind chill made it feel like -5 degrees.
Partly sunny skies are expected today, with a high near 21.
Snow is likely after 2 a.m. tonight, and up to 2 inches of new accumulation are expected. Winds could also gust as high was 20 mph. Tonight’s low will be around 17.
Snow will continue to be likely before 11 a.m. Saturday, followed by freezing rain between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Rain is then expected after 2 p.m. Less than a tenth of an inch of new ice accumulation is expected, but another 2 inches of snow are expected. The high will be near 37.
Saturday night will once again bring a chance of rain before 8 p.m., followed by rain with patchy drizzle into the overnight hours. Up to a quarter of an inch of rainfall is possible, and the low will be around 37.
Rain will round out the weekend on Sunday, but no precipitation amounts have been predicted. The high will be near 47.
Mostly cloudy skies will follow into Sunday night, along with a 40 percent chance of rain before 8 p,m. The low will be around 18.
