STEAM Club meeting Jan. 19
PITTSTON — STEAM Club will meet at 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19. This club is for children in grades Kindergarten through fifth grade who enjoy science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM).
Who says playtime ends at childhood? This series, called Afternoon Recess for Adults, starts 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23 at the library. This week grab the dough and letting go to de-stress with some Play-Doh free play. Coffee, tea, and healthy snack will be served. To register call 570-654-9565.
Teen Reading Lounge will meet from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28.
“Take Your Child to the Library Day” will be held beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4. Activities include ice cream storytime, and ice cream for breakfast, a free book for each child, crafts, lLEGO free play and building toys for babies. Call the library to register.
An Intro to Film Making Class will be held from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4. Actor/Director Vinnie Langdon will teach participants how make their first film and will cover topics like writing a script, building a cast and crew, tips on lighting, sound, camera angles, storytelling, directing, editing options and how to get movies into a film festival. Students ages 17 and older are welcome and registration is required by calling the library.
Page turners Tween Book Club for fourth and fifth graders 4 p.m. Feb. 9. Read, chat about books, snack, and craft. Miss Noelle and Miss Kristin are going to chat about “Tuck Everlasting” by Natalie Babbitt. Light snack is provided, and those attending will make a craft related to the book. Kids ages 18 months to 5 years old can bring their grownup to the library for a fun story, craft and free play from 6 to 6:45 p.m. Monday evenings. This session concludes Feb. 13. Registration is required by calling the library.
Join the Roaming Readers book club for walking, talking and the chance to listen to an audiobook. The group will meet in six-week sessions at 11 a.m. every Tuesday until, Feb. 14. Each walk will last about a half hour. Register for this new, active club by calling the library at 570-655-9565.
Tales on Tuesday with Miss Kristen has started its current session and will conclude Tuesday, Feb. 14. This program features age-appropriate songs, stories, activities and free play for infants, toddlers and pre-school aged children. Registration is available in the children’s wing or by calling the library. The programs are as follows:
• Books and Babies — 9:30 a.m., ages newborn to 18 months.
• Terrific Twos — 10:30 a.m., ages 18 months to 3 years old.
• Preschool Pals — 11:30 a.m., ages 3 to 5.
The Friends of the Pittston Memorial Library meet at 6:30 p.m. the fourth Monday of every month. New members are always welcome. For more information call 570-654-9565.
Lego Club meets Mondays from 4 to 5 p.m. Library provides the Legos, but adult supervision is required and participants are required to help clean up.
Volunteer opportunities are available at the library. Opportunities include helping in the library, or with the Friends of the Pittston Memorial Library group. If interested, fill out a volunteer form at the front desk.
Adult Coloring Club meets at 1 p.m. every Friday and on scheduled evenings.
The Crochet Club meets from 10 to 11:45 a.m. every Tuesday. Participants are asked to bring their own supplies including a hook sized I, J, or K yarn.
Board games for all ages are available at the front desk and can be used anytime.
The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Program at the library is free and open to all children in the community from birth to kindergarten. The child will receive a bag with an age-appropriate book to keep in his or her collection.
WEST PITTSTON LIBRARY
Wear pajamas Thursday, Jan. 19
WEST PITTSTON — Children are invited to the library in their pajamas and bring their favorite stuffed animal at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19 for an evening of stories, games, songs and crafts. When it’s time to say goodnight, the fuzzy friends will spend the night. Pick up time will be from noon to 12:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20. Only one stuffed animal per child, first 24 children only.
Teens are invited to the library at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24 to make their own spices to add to hot chocolate.
The Library Laboratory is back to continue engaging kids ages 9 and up in science-based, hands-on learning activities at the West Pittston Library. Measure, mix, compare, experiment and test in a fun environment. Class size is limited so sign up early.
• February – Upcycled cardboard – 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7. Create projects from cardboard tubes and paper cups.
Participants can come to the library at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11 and spend the afternoon crafting a variety of creations to take home. Choose from an origami monster corner bookmark, miniature clay charm, tissue paper flowers, thumbprint dandelion and handprint ice-cream cones.
Join Jamie Flack, owner of home décor store Rustique in Kingston, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13 for a hands-on demonstration that will showcase how Chalk Paint can be used in a number of ways. Jamie will walk participants through four beginner techniques: distressed finish, smooth finish, rustic finish and color wash. This program costs $75 which includes light refreshments and materials, including paint, brushes, waxes and sandpaper. Receive a voucher for 10% off all Annie Sloan products at the store for attending and complementary wine during the program.
The Love Stinks Chocolate Festival will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14. Model a broken heart with chocolate plastic, indulge in a blind chocolate taste test, play M&M mancala, write unromantic magnetic poetry and create a few “Ten Worst…” lists.
The library, in conjunction with the Junior League of Wilkes Barre, will bring a program to introduce kids to the kitchen. The program will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22. In this program kids of all ages will learn to measure, spread, whisk, slice and eat in a healthy way and will cover basic nutrition with a food group relay race and have books available to explore the topics further. Each child will make their own Antipasto Salad Skewer appetizer and a healthy hummus and cucumber lunch wrap with copies of the recipes to take home. To participate in this program, each child will need to supply their own butter knife, cutting knife, cutting board, small mixing bowl, measuring spoons and whisk. Limited to the first 10 kids.
Join Children’s Program Coordinator Summer Belles from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23 in creating an infinity scarf out of chunky yarn using just your arms. Bring 2-3 skeins of yarn—the chunkier.
Kindergarten Readiness Program is held at 1 p.m. every Friday. This early-literacy enhanced program is designed to introduce children to the library, get them interested in books and develop the skills needed for school. Parents can spend some fun one-on-one time with their child, or grandchild, as we read books together, sing songs, play games and make crafts centered around the weekly, kid-friendly theme. Learn pre-reading techniques that can be done at home to enhance their skills. Register by Wednesday of each week.
WYOMING FREE LIBRARY
Discuss ‘Victoria’ Jan. 16
WYOMING — The library will hold a discussion group during the first season of “Victoria” and it will meet from 5 to 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16. For more information, contact the library.
Fill-a-bag book sale will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10 and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11. Cost is $5 per bag and the library is accepting books for the sale. For more information, call the library.
LEGO Club will meet from 11 a.m. to noon on the following Saturdays: Feb. 11, March 11, April 8. This program is free and for children of all ages. Registration is required by calling the library.
Preschool Story Time for children between ages 3 and 5 will be held from 11 a.m. to noon every Monday beginning Feb. 13 and concluding March 6.
The library will hold a four-part “Masterpiece Theater” book discussion series starting at noon on Saturday, Feb. 18. The first book in the series is “Ross Poldark” by Winston Graham. To register, contact the library.
Reading help will be available at the library for children in grades 1-4 from 1 to 3 p.m. every Wednesday. Call the library to register.
The Literary Snoops Book Club meets at noon the second Wednesday of east month. Participants are encouraged to bring a bag lunch for the discussion.
