Card making class is Feb. 6

PITTSTON — A beginner card making class will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6. Participants will learn to make four greeting cards — two birthday and two Valentine’s Day — for just $10 per person. The cost includes four cards, all supplies and instructions. Call or visit the library to reserve a spot.

Page turners Tween Book Club for fourth and fifth graders 4 p.m. Feb. 9. Read, chat about books, snack and craft. Miss Noelle and Miss Kristin are going to chat about “Tuck Everlasting” by Natalie Babbitt. Light snack is provided, and those attending will make a craft related to the book. The Library’s new fiber art club will meet Thursday afternoons from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Bring your own materials and make new friends while crocheting, knitting or working with felt.

A free on-camera acting class will be held from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11 in the John P. Cosgrove Center. Actor/director Vinnie Langdon will teach participants how to become an actor and cover topics like where to find casting calls, how to build your acting resume and reel, tips on how to audition professionally, how to perform a scene on camera, how to self critique your performances, how to set goals for your acting career and more. This program is for students ages 17 and up. Call the library to register.

Teen Advisory Club will meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12.

Book Club will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13 to discuss “The History of Love” by Nicole Krauss. Copes are limited, but are available at the front desk.

Kids ages 18 months to 5 years old can bring their grownup to the library for a fun story, craft and free play from 6 to 6:45 p.m. Monday evenings. This session concludes Feb. 13. Registration is required by calling the library.

The library is hosting chocolate covered treat making during part two of their Adult Recess series, held from noon to 1:30 p.m. Feb. 13. Coffee, tea and a healthy snack will also be served. The event is free. Call 570-654-9565 to register.

Join the Roaming Readers book club for walking, talking and the chance to listen to an audiobook. The group will meet in six-week sessions at 11 a.m. every Tuesday until, Feb. 14. Each walk will last about a half hour. Register for this new, active club by calling the library at 570-655-9565.

Tales on Tuesday with Miss Kristen has started its current session and will conclude Tuesday, Feb. 14. This program features age-appropriate songs, stories, activities and free play for infants, toddlers and pre-school aged children. Registration is available in the children’s wing or by calling the library. The programs are as follows:

• Books and Babies — 9:30 a.m., ages newborn to 18 months.

• Terrific Twos — 10:30 a.m., ages 18 months to 3 years old.

• Preschool Pals — 11:30 a.m., ages 3 to 5.

The library’s very first Daddy/Daughter Hair Factory Event will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18 in the John P. Cosgrove Center. In this class, dads will learn the basics of brushing, braiding and buns in a fun, hands-on environment that promotes bonding with their daughters. Participants will receive the tools needed to make hair-care another skill in the daddy tool belt. All girls will receive a hair care package to make the process a little easier at home. This event is free, but space is limited. Call the library to reserve a spot.

A Pre-Oscar Party will be held at the library as participants will view some of the nominated movies. “Zootopia,” rated PG, will be shown at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 20; “Arrival,” rated PG-13, will be shown at 10 a.m. and later “Hacksaw Ridge,” rated R will be shown at 12:30 p.m. Saturday Feb. 25. WEST PITTSTON LIBRARY

Lib Lab returns Feb. 7

WEST PITTSTON — The Library Laboratory is back to continue engaging kids ages 9 and up in science-based, hands-on learning activities at the West Pittston Library. Measure, mix, compare, experiment and test in a fun environment. Class size is limited so sign up early.

• February – Upcycled cardboard – 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7. Create projects from cardboard tubes and paper cups.

Participants can come to the library at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11 and spend the afternoon crafting a variety of creations to take home. Choose from an origami monster corner bookmark, miniature clay charm, tissue paper flowers, thumbprint dandelion and handprint ice-cream cones.

Join Jamie Flack, owner of home décor store Rustique in Kingston, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13 for a hands-on demonstration that will showcase how Chalk Paint can be used in a number of ways. Jamie will walk participants through four beginner techniques: distressed finish, smooth finish, rustic finish and color wash. This program costs $75 which includes light refreshments and materials, including paint, brushes, waxes and sandpaper. Receive a voucher for 10% off all Annie Sloan products at the store for attending and complementary wine during the program.

The Love Stinks Chocolate Festival will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14. Model a broken heart with chocolate plastic, indulge in a blind chocolate taste test, play M&M mancala, write unromantic magnetic poetry and create a few “Ten Worst…” lists.

The library, in conjunction with the Junior League of Wilkes Barre, will bring a program to introduce kids to the kitchen. The program will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22. In this program kids of all ages will learn to measure, spread, whisk, slice and eat in a healthy way and will cover basic nutrition with a food group relay race and have books available to explore the topics further. Each child will make their own Antipasto Salad Skewer appetizer and a healthy hummus and cucumber lunch wrap with copies of the recipes to take home. To participate in this program, each child will need to supply their own butter knife, cutting knife, cutting board, small mixing bowl, measuring spoons and whisk. Limited to the first 10 children.

Join Children’s Program Coordinator Summer Belles from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23 in creating an infinity scarf out of chunky yarn using just your arms. Bring 2-3 skeins of yarn — the chunkier, the better.

WYOMING FREE LIBRARY

Weinberg representative available Feb. 6

WYOMING —A representative from the Weinberg Regional Food Bank will be available from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6 to register Luzerne County residents age 60 and older in the Commodity Supplemental Food Program made available available by the United States Department of Agriculture. The CSFP provides a box of non-perishable food once a month to qualified individuals. This program does not affect SNAP benefits or any other assistance program. Income qualifications: The monthly gross income of applicants with a household size of one cannot exceed $1,287 or $15,444/year. The monthly gross income of applicants with a household size of two cannot exceed $1,736 or $20,826/year. Applicants must bring proof of household income and a current ID with age and current address.

Fill-a-bag book sale will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10 and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11. Cost is $5 per bag and the library is accepting books for the sale. For more information, call the library.

LEGO Club will meet from 11 a.m. to noon on the following Saturdays: Feb. 11, March 11, April 8. This program is free and for children of all ages. Registration is required by calling the library.

Preschool Story Time for children between ages 3 and 5 will be held from 11 a.m. to noon every Monday beginning Feb. 13 and concluding March 6.

LAFLIN — Card making will be held at the library Thursday, Feb.9 through Saturday, Feb. 11. Children can drop in and make an original, one-of-a-kind card to give to their favorite Valentine. The library will provide the supplies.
