Heavy snow is expected to impact the Wyoming Valley tonight and into Thursday morning.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Luzerne and Lackawanna counties from 12 a.m. until 12 p.m. Thursday.

Snow is expected to overspread the region between midnight and 2 a.m. tonight. Snow could be heavy at times into Thursday morning, with snowfall rates of up to an inch per hour possible. The snow should diminish between 10 a.m. and noon Thursday.

Anywhere from 5 to 8 inches of snowfall could fall.

The forecast

The National Weather Service indicated it was 49 degrees as of 6:54 a.m. at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport, and fog and mist were reported.

Isolated showers are possible before 9 a.m. today. Mostly cloudy skies are expected otherwise, and the high will be near 48.

Snow is likely after 2 a.m. tonight, and the snow could be heavy at times. Up to 4 inches of snowfall could fall, and the low will be around 25.

Thursday will once again bring a high likelihood of snow before 10 a.m., with another 2 inches of snowfall possible. The high will be near 25.

Mostly cloudy skies are predicted for Thursday night, along with a chance of snow showers between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m. Little or no snow accumulation is expected, but winds could gust as high as 21 miles per hour. The low will be around 16.

Partly sunny skies will round out the week on Friday, along with a slight chance of snow showers after 2 p.m. The high will be near 28.

Mostly cloudy skies will follow into Friday night, along with a chance of snow showers. The low will be around 24.
